In the 1850s, trains were the fastest land travel, but railroads didn't span the U.S. Pioneers faced a six-month wagon journey to the West. Lincoln authorized the first transcontinental railroad, with Union Pacific starting in Nebraska and Central Pacific in California. Laborers, mainly Irish and Chinese, faced harsh conditions. The railroad disrupted Native American lands and lifestyles. The two railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, reducing cross-country travel to seven days and opening land to settlers.
