The Reconquista of Spain was a centuries-long struggle between Christian kingdoms and Moorish rulers. It began with the Umayyad invasion in 711 and the establishment of the Kingdom of Asturias by Pelayo. Over time, Christian kingdoms like Leon, Navarre, and Aragon emerged, challenging Moorish dominance. The Umayyad Caliphate in Cordoba reached its peak but eventually fragmented. The Almoravids and later the Almohads from North Africa posed significant threats to Christian advances. The turning point came with the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, leading to Christian dominance. By the late 15th century, Ferdinand and Isabella's marriage united Spain, culminating in the conquest of Granada and the end of Moorish rule.
