Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was a catastrophic storm that reached Category 5 strength in the Gulf of Mexico. It made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane, causing widespread destruction and a storm surge higher than Hurricane Camille. The storm moved northward, affecting areas as far as southeastern Canada, dropping significant rainfall and producing tornadoes. Katrina was one of the deadliest and most expensive hurricanes in U.S. history, with over 1,800 fatalities and $125 billion in damages. The failure of flood walls and levees in New Orleans exacerbated the disaster, leading to massive flooding and loss of life. The storm tested societal resilience but also highlighted the efforts of those who helped others during the crisis.
