The government, under Richard II, imposed unpopular taxes to fund the costly Hundred Years' War, sparking widespread unrest. In 1381, uprisings began in Essex and Kent, with rebels advancing on London. Despite initial successes, including entering the city and gaining support, the rebellion was ultimately suppressed. Richard II's negotiations failed, and the rebellion's leader, Wat Tyler, was killed. The rebellion ended with the reestablishment of serfdom and little achieved.
