In 1493, after Columbus's discoveries, Spanish rulers sought papal support to claim the New World, leading to Pope Alexander IV's demarcation line. This line granted Spain rights to lands west of it, while Portugal was to explore east. Dissatisfied, Portugal negotiated the Treaty of Tordesillas, moving the line further west, allowing them to claim Brazil. This exploration laid the foundation for Brazil's territorial claims in South America.
