Pattie Ruffner Jacobs, a key figure in the suffrage movement, was born in 1875 and became a suffragist in 1910. She founded the Alabama Equal Suffrage Association in 1912 and worked tirelessly to pass a state amendment for women's suffrage. Despite setbacks, including the rejection of a suffrage bill in 1915, Jacobs shifted her focus to a federal amendment. She joined the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1916 and returned to Alabama in 1919 to advocate for the 19th amendment's ratification. Although Alabama initially rejected the amendment, Jacobs helped transform the Alabama Equal Suffrage Association into the League of Women Voters of Alabama in 1920, preparing women for their new roles as voters.
