The Texas annexation was the 1845 incorporation of the Republic of Texas into the United States as the 28th state. Initially, both major U.S. political parties opposed the annexation due to concerns over slavery and potential conflict with Mexico. Despite this, President John Tyler pursued annexation to counter British influence and secure political support. The annexation treaty was initially rejected by the Senate, but after the election of pro-annexation President James K. Polk, Congress passed a bill allowing Texas to join the Union. Texas accepted the offer, and statehood was formalized in 1845.
