In 1944, Sylvia Mendes was denied entry to a white school due to her skin color. Her family, led by her parents Gonzalo and Felicitas, fought against this discrimination, eventually filing a class action lawsuit with other Mexican families. The case gained support from civil rights activists, including Thurgood Marshall. In 1946, the court ruled in favor of the Mendes family, setting a precedent against school segregation. Sylvia continued to advocate for civil rights, receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
