By the end of 1916, the Allies and Germans were locked in a stalemate on the Western Front. The US joined the Allies in 1917, with troops arriving in Europe by 1918. Germany gambled on defeating the Allies before US forces could fully arrive. The first US Infantry Division, known as The Big Red One, quickly gained a reputation for hard fighting. US troops underwent extensive training in French and English warfare techniques, becoming proficient in hand grenade use.
