Charles Drew, born in 1904, was a pioneering African American doctor who excelled in sports and academics. Despite racial barriers, he studied medicine at McGill University, where he innovated blood transfusion techniques, including separating and preserving plasma. Drew established blood banks and played a crucial role in World War II blood donation efforts. He protested racial segregation in blood donations, resigning from his position. Drew's legacy includes numerous awards, memorials, and his influence on medical practices. He died in 1950, the same year the Red Cross ended blood segregation.
