From 1300 to 1700, the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires, known as the Gunpowder Empires, dominated parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Ottomans, based in Turkey, were Sunni Muslims, while the Safavids in Persia were Shia Muslims. The Mughals in India were known for their architecture, including the Taj Mahal. By the 1800s, these empires declined, allowing European nations to dominate Asia.
