Francis Drake, a complex figure, was seen as a pirate by the Spanish and a hero by the English. Born in 1540, he began his maritime career early, eventually inheriting a trading ship. His voyages, often marked by conflict with the Spanish, included attacking Portuguese towns and engaging in the slave trade. Despite setbacks, Drake's vendetta against Spain earned him a privateer's license from Queen Elizabeth I. His most notable achievement was capturing the silver train at Nombre de Dios. Drake's circumnavigation of the globe brought him fame and a knighthood. His later years saw continued conflict with Spain until his death in 1596.
