Opal Lee, a retired educator and activist, played a pivotal role in making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Born in 1926 in Texas, her family's home was destroyed by a racist mob, sparking her lifelong advocacy for Black Americans. She walked from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., at age 89 to promote Juneteenth. Lee has served on numerous boards, including Habitat for Humanity and the Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society. She has received multiple honors, including being named Texan of the Year and a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Lee holds degrees in education and counseling and was awarded an honorary degree from SMU.
