James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president, led the nation during the Era of Good Feelings, expanding it from 19 to 24 states. Despite early criticisms of his intellect, Monroe was praised for his wisdom and devotion. He was known for his reserved demeanor and interest in elegant living. Monroe's political career included roles as Secretary of State and Secretary of War, and he was instrumental in the Louisiana Purchase. His presidency was marked by tranquility and growth, though his wife's limited social activities caused some controversy. After his presidency, Monroe retired to Virginia and later moved to New York, where he died on July 4th, 1831.
