Skates, related to rays and sharks, are cartilaginous fish found in the Gulf of Maine and North Atlantic Ocean. They move by gliding along the ocean floor using their fins and appendages. Skates have adapted to be flat for camouflage, hiding under sand from predators and prey. They consume a variety of animals, including fish and crustaceans. Unlike rays, skates lay eggs known as 'mermaid purses.' The video encourages further exploration of skate species.
