In 1944, the Allies planned Operation Overlord to liberate Europe from Nazi control. The operation faced the challenge of the Atlantic Wall, a series of fortifications along the coast. The initial phase, Operation Neptune, involved amphibious landings on D-Day, June 6th, at five beaches in Normandy: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Each beach presented unique challenges, from strong currents to fortified defenses. Despite heavy casualties, the Allies secured a foothold, marking a turning point in WWII by forcing the Nazis into a two-front war.
