Benjamin Banneker was a pioneering African-American scientist, astronomer, and advocate for racial equality. Born free in Maryland in 1731, he was largely self-educated and made significant contributions to science and mathematics, including predicting solar eclipses and publishing almanacs. Banneker corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, urging him to promote racial equality and abolish slavery. Despite his achievements, many of his personal artifacts were lost in a fire after his death in 1806. Today, his legacy is honored through various commemorations across the United States.
