Cameroon, once a German colony, was divided between Britain and France post-WWI. The decolonization wave led to French Cameroon's independence in 1960, while British Cameroons had to choose between joining Nigeria or the Republic of Cameroon. The union formed a federal state, but Southern Cameroons felt marginalized, leading to demands for autonomy. The Anglophone crisis escalated into conflict, with separatists and the government clashing. Despite attempts at dialogue, including Swiss mediation and negotiations with imprisoned leaders, the conflict persists.
