Heritage Day, celebrated on September 24th, encourages South Africans to honor their diverse cultures and traditions. Originally known as Shaka Day, it commemorated Shaka Zulu, a unifying Zulu King. The day was almost removed from the national holiday list but was reinstated as Heritage Day after a compromise with the IFP. Today, it is also known as Braai Day, celebrating the South African tradition of barbecues. South Africa boasts six UNESCO heritage sites, highlighting its rich cultural landscape.
