Magellan's expedition, financed by Spain, aimed to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west around the American continent. Departing in 1519, the fleet faced challenges, including a mutiny and harsh weather. After wintering at San Julian Bay, they discovered a passage to the Pacific. The crossing was arduous, but they reached the Philippines, where Magellan was killed. The remaining ships reached the Spice Islands, and the Victoria completed the first circumnavigation, proving global sea travel possible.
