In 1939, Joseph and his family are on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean, fleeing from Germany. Joseph's father, Aaron, is paranoid about being returned to Germany, but Joseph explains they are slowing for a funeral at sea. The deceased, Professor Weiler, died of cancer, not Nazi actions. Despite his condition, Aaron insists on attending the funeral, recalling his time in Dachau. During the funeral, a Nazi officer attempts to cover the body with a swastika flag, but the captain intervenes. The funeral proceeds, and Joseph reflects on his father's trauma and their uncertain future.
