Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are powerful cosmic events that release immense energy, more than the sun will in its lifetime. They originate from supernovae or neutron star mergers, forming black holes. GRBs are detected by spy satellites and are the brightest events in the universe. While most GRBs are harmless, a nearby one could devastate Earth by depleting the ozone layer, exposing life to deadly radiation. GRBs might explain the lack of life elsewhere in the universe, as they could regularly wipe out life-supporting environments.
