In 2011, geoscientist Andrés Ruzo, who grew up in Peru, Nicaragua, and the U.S., embarked on an expedition to find a legendary boiling river in the Amazon. Despite being far from any active volcano, he discovered the river, known as the Shanay-Timpishka, with waters averaging 86°C (186°F). The local indigenous people had known about the river for generations, but it was unknown to the outside world until Ruzo's discovery.
