Great white sharks are rarely found in aquariums due to their unique needs and challenges. The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California successfully displayed six white sharks between 2004 and 2011, with the longest stay being over six months. Challenges include their need to move constantly to breathe and their diet of mammals. The aquarium used baby sharks to mitigate some issues, but movement in tanks remained problematic. The last shark was released in 2011 and died shortly after, leading to the aquarium ceasing further attempts.
