In February 1830, Captain Robert Fitzroy embarked on a mission in Tierra del Fuego to recover his stolen whaleboat. Despite a two-month search, the boat remained elusive. Frustrated, Fitzroy captured four locals, renaming them and hoping to use them as interpreters. When this failed, he devised a new plan to take them to England, civilize them, and return them to spread Christianity.
