In January 1925, Leonhard Seppala, a Norwegian immigrant and expert dog musher, became a national hero during a diphtheria outbreak in Nome, Alaska. He organized a relay of sled teams to transport life-saving serum over 600 miles. The journey, led by the dog Balto, saved 2,000 people. Seppala and his dogs gained fame, touring America, and Balto was honored with a statue in Central Park.
