On July 6, 1988, the Piper Alpha oil rig, located 120 miles northeast of Scotland, experienced a catastrophic disaster. Known as one of the largest and most successful oil rigs, it faced a critical failure when a condensate pump was brought back online without a safety valve, leading to a massive gas leak. At 9:55 p.m., a spark ignited the gas, causing an explosion that resulted in the deaths of 167 crew members, with only 61 surviving. The rig eventually collapsed into the sea, marking one of the deadliest offshore oil disasters in history.
