In May 1916, the British Grand Fleet, led by Admiral Jelo, departed from Scapa Flow, while the German High Seas Fleet, under Admiral Shear, set off with fewer ships. Initial engagements saw the British and German fleets exchange fire, resulting in significant casualties, including the sinking of HMS Indefatigable. Despite strategic maneuvers by both sides, poor visibility and communication issues prevented a decisive victory. The German fleet managed to escape under cover of darkness. Upon returning, the British fleet faced public scrutiny for the inconclusive outcome of the Battle of Jutland.
