In early 1944, American submarines in Australia, led by Rear Admiral Ralph Waldo Christie, targeted Japanese ships to support the Pacific War. Allied operatives gathered intelligence to aid these missions. By May 1944, Australian commandos in Borneo were betrayed to Japan's military police, the Kempe Tai. With some captured and others hiding, a rescue mission was planned using a submarine to extract the commandos before the Japanese could find them.
