In 1119, a massacre of pilgrims en route to Jerusalem caused outrage in Europe. In response, nine Crusader Knights, led by French nobleman Hugues de Payens, vowed to protect pilgrims, forming the Knights Templar. The Templars were organized to escort pilgrims and established their headquarters at the al-Aqsa Mosque on Temple Mount, believed to be the site of Solomon's Temple. This location held mystical significance for the Templars, who named themselves the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, later known as the Knights Templar.
