The Olympic Peninsula, a remote and rugged region, was one of the last areas in the continental US to be explored by white pioneers. Named by a British mariner in 1788, the Olympic Mountains, with Mount Olympus as its highest peak, are home to the Blue Glacier, the lowest altitude glacier in the US. Exploration of this challenging terrain began in 1885, led by Lieutenant Joseph O'Neill. Despite initial views of the land as impractical, President Theodore Roosevelt recognized its value, designating it as a national monument in 1909. Later, FDR established the Olympic National Park, preserving over a million acres of wilderness.
