In September 1974, Stephen King stayed at the Stanley Hotel, which inspired his novel The Shining. The hotel was fictionalized as The Overlook in the book, but Stanley Kubrick chose to film the exteriors at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. The Stanley Hotel later appeared in the 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber, where it was depicted as a luxurious hotel in Aspen, although the film used a mix of locations from Aspen, Breckenridge, and Park City, Utah.
