The idea for a museum dedicated to African Americans was first proposed by Civil War veterans and later supported by the Civil Rights generation. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the National Mall, is designed to reflect the optimism and resilience of the African American community. It celebrates their achievements and contributions to America and the world. The museum will open in 2015, joining other Smithsonian museums in telling the stories of those who made the country great.
