Oscar Washington Tavares will continue as the head coach of Uruguay's national football team for another four years, extending his already historic tenure. This decision comes after weeks of speculation following the World Cup and amid a scandal that led to the resignation of the president of the Uruguayan Football Association, now under FIFA intervention. Tavares, who has been coaching Uruguay since 2006 and previously from 1988 to 1990, has led the team in 185 matches, making him the coach with the most World Cup appearances with the same national team. Under his leadership, Uruguay achieved a fourth-place finish in the 2010 World Cup and a fifth-place finish in 2018, as well as winning the Copa América in 2011. If he fulfills his contract, Tavares will coach until he is 75 years old.
