Gregor McGregor was a notorious con man who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. He married into wealthy families, faked military credentials, and rose to high ranks in Venezuela. He attempted to conquer Florida and Panama but failed. His most infamous scam was creating a fake country, Poyais, convincing settlers and investors of its existence. Despite his crimes, he lived peacefully in Venezuela until his death.
