NASA's New Horizons spacecraft to begin Pluto mission

The New Horizons spacecraft, about the size of a baby grand piano, is on a mission to explore Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Its objectives include mapping the surface, composition, and temperatures of these celestial bodies, as well as studying their geology and morphology. To minimize wear and tear, New Horizons has entered hibernation 18 times since its launch in January 2006. The spacecraft is expected to make its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, and will continue exploring the Kuiper Belt from 2016 to 2020.
