John Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, accidentally discovered gold, leading to a massive influx of people. Sutter's settlement efforts in California faced challenges, including tensions with Mexican authorities and Native American tribes. The Mexican-American War eventually secured California for the US. Sutter's partnership with James Marshall led to the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, but the ensuing gold rush ruined Sutter's business. The rush attracted people globally, but most found little success, leaving many disappointed.
