The California Gold Rush from 1848 to 1849 attracted around 300,000 people seeking fortune. Despite the known hardships, many settlers journeyed west, driven by the promise of gold. John Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, accidentally discovered gold, leading to a massive influx of people. Sutter's settlement efforts in California faced challenges, including tensions with Mexican authorities and Native American tribes. The Mexican-American War eventually secured California for the US. Sutter's partnership with James Marshall led to the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, but the ensuing gold rush ruined Sutter's business. The rush attracted people globally, but most found little success, leaving many disappointed.
