Khumarawayh ibn Ahmad ibn Tulun became the ruler of Egypt after his father's death. The Abbasid Caliphate saw an opportunity to reclaim Egypt and the Levant but was defeated by Khumarawayh, who then secured a peace agreement granting him and his descendants control over these regions for thirty years. He further strengthened ties with the Abbasids through the marriage of his daughter to the Abbasid Caliph. Khumarawayh enjoyed full independence and influence over Egypt and the Levant until his assassination in 282 AH (895 AD). He was buried in Egypt next to his father.
