Harriet R Gold Boudinot's interracial marriage to Elias Boudinot in the 1820s faced significant challenges from both the Cornwall community and the Cherokee Nation. Despite initial resistance, Harriet's family approved the marriage, which led to community uproar and threats. The marriage prompted the Cherokee Nation to alter its matrilineal tradition to ensure clan membership for their children. Harriet was eventually accepted by the Cherokee community and advocated for their rights until her death in 1836.
