The Venezuelan opposition is organizing nationwide gatherings on October 12 as a rehearsal for collecting signatures needed to call a referendum against President Nicolás Maduro. They aim to gather at 1,356 points across the country. If they collect four million signatures, the electoral body must call a referendum. However, the National Electoral Council stated that even if the signatures are collected, the referendum would not be held until February or March. The opposition wants the referendum before January 10, 2017, to prevent the vice president from completing Maduro's term if he loses.
