Victor Lustig, a con artist, used a newspaper article about the potential dismantling of the Eiffel Tower to execute a scam. He posed as a government official and convinced steel companies to bid for the tower's scrap metal. Lustig selected a target willing to bribe him for the contract, took the bribe, and disappeared. The victim was too embarrassed to report the scam. Lustig attempted the con a second time, but one of the targets contacted the police.
