Local residents helped by covering the whales with blankets and dousing them with water, but many did not survive. Released whales were tagged for monitoring, though some may re-strand. Efforts also included removing carcasses to prevent shark attraction. Two years prior, the same area saw nearly 500 whales stranded, with over 300 dying despite rescue attempts. Necropsies will be conducted on deceased whales to understand the cause of these strandings.
