North Korea has enacted a law allowing preemptive nuclear strikes amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The announcement coincides with the 74th anniversary of North Korea's founding. Pyongyang has conducted numerous military tests this year and blames Seoul for a COVID-19 outbreak. The new law permits automatic nuclear retaliation if an imminent threat is detected. In July, Kim Jong-un stated North Korea's readiness for nuclear conflict with the US and South Korea. The US and South Korea have conducted significant joint military exercises in response to North Korea's actions.
