Guatemala is set to return to the polls on October 25th. The second round will see right-wing comedian Jimmy Morales face off against right-wing lawyer Manuel Baldizón. Former first lady Sandra Torres and 11 other candidates are out of the race. The election occurs amid a calm yet indignant atmosphere, following the resignation of President Otto Pérez, who is in prison awaiting trial for customs fraud. His former vice president, Rosana Valdetti, is also imprisoned due to the corruption scandal. The new leader, taking office on January 14th, will face the challenge of restoring hope to a nation weary of corruption, poverty, and violence fueled by drug trafficking and gangs.
