Hiroshima Maidens at ceremony prior to their 1955 departure for the US for surgeries

A private group sponsored a plan to bring 25 young girls, severely scarred by the Hiroshima blast, to the United States for surgery and rehabilitation. These girls were within a mile of the explosion, and the radiation burns were so severe that Japanese surgeons struggled to repair the recurring scar tissue.
