Khaled Mechahal was reelected as the leader of Hamas in Cairo. He will be assisted by Ismail Haniyeh and Musabu Marzouk, who will manage Gaza and the movement in exile, respectively. Once seen as a radical, Mechahal is now viewed as a moderate due to the Arab Spring's influence. Many believe he aims to succeed Mahmoud Abbas as the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Despite expressing a desire to step down, Mechahal remains in his position due to regional instability. Hamas has governed Gaza since 2007 after defeating Fatah in elections.
