VOICED : Metro de Chile usara energias renovables en 2018

The Santiago Metro will source 60% of its energy from solar and wind power by 2018, making it the first of its kind globally. This initiative, highlighted by President Michelle Bachelet, will see 42% of the energy from solar and 18% from wind. The metro, serving over 2.5 million passengers daily, will benefit from a solar plant generating 111 megawatts and a wind plant with 56 turbines, both located in the Atacama Desert. These projects, requiring a $500 million investment, will reduce CO2 emissions by 130,000 tons annually. By 2050, Chile aims for 70% of its electricity to come from renewable sources.
