The Brazilian army will support Rio de Janeiro's police following a series of attacks. Governor Sergio Cabral announced that President Dilma Rousseff approved the use of the military under the Guarantee of Law and Order, allowing them to act as police. This will occur in the Maré favelas, a strategic area near the international airport. The decision is a response to organized crime's attacks on police units. Since 2008, Rio has implemented a policy to pacify favelas, historically controlled by drug traffickers or militias.
