In Italy, the Five Star Movement and the League Party, once political adversaries, united against a far-right leader who caused a political crisis. Under Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, Italy's populist government demanded stricter EU measures on migrant flows. Salvini's party withdrew from its coalition with the Five Star Movement, effectively shutting down the government. He then called for a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who resigned before the vote. This left the president with the choice of early elections or forming a new coalition. After consultations, the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement agreed to form a new government with Conte as Prime Minister.
