Intermediate German #13: Bearskin (Bärenhäuter)

A soldier, left homeless after the war, makes a deal with the devil to gain wealth but must endure seven years without grooming or prayer. Known as Bearskinner, he becomes unrecognizable but helps others with his wealth. He meets an innkeeper's daughters, and the youngest agrees to marry him despite his appearance. After seven years, the devil cleanses him, and he returns to claim his bride. The two eldest sisters, envious, meet tragic ends, while the youngest marries the transformed soldier.
